[September, 2012] Ali Enterprises fire

Over 289 people killed in a fire in a garment factory in Pakistan.

On 12th September, 2012 at least 289 people were killed in an inferno at a garment factory in Karachi, Pakistan.

Hundreds of people were trapped inside the building when the fire broke out with metal grills on the windows, no fire exits, and locks on doors into the stairwell that led up to the roof, preventing them from escaping.

We started running towards the exit. There were 150-200 people all running and pushing each other. I fell down unconscious… then I managed to get some air from a vent. I started screaming. A crane made a hole in the wall and I was able to jump. I begged the rescue workers to help my relatives, but no-one paid any attention. Allah Warayo, Ali Enterprises fire survivor

Officials said the factory was full of combustible materials, including piles of clothes and chemicals.
