People Tree is a pioneer in sustainable Fair Trade fashion founded in 1991. Every product is made to the highest ethical and environmental standards from start to finish. They create innovative and affordable fashion while respecting people and the planet.
Their mission is to support producer partners' efforts towards economic independence and control over their environment and to challenge the power structures that undermine their rights to a livelihood.
Ethics
Ethical Manufacturing
People Tree see it as their mission to work closely with people in developing countries to build viable businesses that can sustain communities. They pass on their knowledge and provide financial assistance when needed so that these fledgling businesses can not only meet their high production standards, but also develop competitive, desirable products.
Sustainable Materials
People Tree are committed to using only natural fibres or fibres that follow closed loop processes, such as Lenzing certified TENCEL ™. They are Soil Association and GOTS certified - these demonstrate that the fibres are produced organically, processed to strict environmental standards under good working conditions in the factories, and has been certified by an independent, third party along the whole supply chain.
Sustainable Production
As per their environmental policy, People Tree promote environmentally responsible initiatives for a sustainable future. They protect water supplies through the use of effluent water treatment plants, rainwater harvesting and water recycling. They also support their producer partners' efforts towards control over their local environment and community
Sustainable Packaging
They use recyclable plastic packaging because in accordance with their commitment to sustainability they employ sea-freight for the majority of their products. This means they have to pack them in plastic to protect them from moisture damage in transit. The plastic they use is made from polypropylene and is recyclable and biodegradable.
Gives to charity
The People Tree Foundation is an independent charity, working alongside People Tree the Fair Trade Company
Social Projects
People Tree designers create beautiful clothes using hand skills for a simple reason: traditional skills such as weaving and embroidery provide livelihoods for artisans in rural areas across the developing world, meaning that they do not have to travel to the cities for work.
Recycled Materials
Some garments are made from recycled materials like recycled cashmere and wool.
Reclaimed Materials
Some items have been made using left over fabrics from past production.
Vegan
Their organic cotton, organic linen and TENCEL ™ products are certified by PETA and are suitable for vegans.
